I am an anthropologist with a keen interest in photography, film, and visual design. My primary research area is highland Asia – Tibet, the Himalayas, and more recently the Pamirs. I wrote a book, directed two feature length documentary films, and created the visual ethnography blog [the other image]. Learn more about my works and projects below.
My doctoral research (2006-2010) on the politics, ethics, and aesthetics of the emerging Tibetan medicine industry in Tibet.
My current research project (2010-2015) addresses the question, what China's rise means for the people living directly along its borders.
A documentary film, two articles, and a masters thesis on the epic story of a family of Buryat physicians and their efforts to translate an Eastern medical science into European thought and culture.
